When Elk Avenue in Crested Butte is bumper to bumper traffic in the summer, and every restaurant has a line out the door, take a breather and spend a perfect weekend in Gunnison, Colorado.
If you typically blast past Gunnison on your way to Crested Butte, next time, pause and look around. One of the last great Colorado towns is home to Western Colorado University, amazing restaurants, and some of the best outdoor recreation in the state!
Here is our perfect weekend in Gunnison:
Wake up and grab breakfast at Backcountry Cafe on Main Street. The breakfast burrito will fuel you for the day.
Head to Wheelies and Waves and grab some boards for the Blue Mesa Reservoir. Go in the morning before the afternoon winds kick up.
On your way back, hit up the Whitewater Park and try your hand at river surfing or just watch everyone practicing in the wave. This is the perfect spot for a picnic lunch (or leftovers from breakfast!)
Take an afternoon hike at Hartman Rocks. Hartman Rocks is one of Gunnison’s greatest gems. It’s a paradise of desert mountain biking, motorcycling, rock climbing, horseback riding, trail running, and camping. With miles of trails and roads maintained by the BLM and local Gunnison recreation groups, Hartman’s is one of western Colorado’s best kept secrets. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a dirtbike from Wheelies and Waves and see as much of the terrain as possible in one afternoon.
Happy Hour at High Alpine Brewing on the deck. We highly recommend the Gunny Gold Kolsh and Lanai pizza!
Hit up a concert at the I Bar Ranch. This outdoor venue has amazing concerts and events all summer long.
Breakfast at the classic W Cafe in Gunnison or grab a quick coffee at the Double Shot before heading out on your Gunnison River Tour with Wheelies and Waves! Put your paddling skills to the test on the lower stretch of the Gunnison River with an experienced guide. Paddle down the river into the canyon towards the Blue Mesa, this is an experience you’ll never forget!
Get a famous Dive Burger for lunch at The Dive, just 2 blocks from Wheelies and Waves.
Stroll the shops on Main Street.
Head to the River Bar at Garlic Mike’s for afternoon cocktails on the river and watch rafter’s go down the Gunnison River.
