Help us protect our paradise
The Slate River is a world class river experience. Float through Crested Butte with scenic views of Mt. Crested Butte and the surrounding mountains. There are two floatable sections of river along the slate which are both through mostly private property.
The lower slate starts at the town rec path bridge on the east side of town. Head towards Mt. Crested Butte and turn right at the Gas Cafe. The river access is straight ahead at the rec path bridge. This hour to hour and half float winds through the upper valley and is great for beginner paddlers.
The Upper Slate River Valley is an extremely amazing area within Crested Butte. Starting at Oh Be Joyful campground or Gunsight bridge, this float is typically close to two hours with epic view of Mt. Crested Butte. Please make sure your vessel is river worthy and be sure to check the weather before departure. This stretch of river is all private property, please stay on your vessel and respect private property. You will encounter some PVC ranching fences along this stretch of river that you can simply lay down on your board and float under.
The Upper Slate River is home to the highest elevation Blue Heron Rookery in the country. Please, please keep quite as you float by this sensitive habitat of over 40 birds. CB SUP is always working with local ranchers, property owners, and the community to ensure responsible paddling throughout the entire Gunnison Valley.
